211info Responds to Flood
Disaster in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
|
From the
desk of Jeri Shumate, Executive
Director
In the
last few years, there has been tremedous press about the
role of 2-1-1 in disaster response. So, it seems
surprising that in 2007, only 1.4% of all 2-1-1
responded to were actually related to disaster.
Nationwide 2-1-1 call centers are responding to the
daily needs of individuals and families in their
communities: housing, food, medical and other
necessities. But when the disaster hits your community
and 2-1-1 is called into action, your world changes
forever.
I had the opportunity to work at
the 2-1-1 call center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa the third
week after that region experienced epic floods, floods
that exceeded not only the carefully defined 100 Year
Flood Plain but even the 500 Year Flood Plain, floods
that defied all possible preparation and
planning.
It is a testimonial to
the readiness of Cedar Rapids that, while more than
7,000 buildings were impacted not a single life was lost
due to the flooding. In spite of the magnitude of the
flood, this community was as ready as it could possibly
be. Part of that readiness included the fact that
2-1-1 was involved in planning and exercising.
So even with all the preparation
you think you have in place, you may not be really
ready. And even with all the technology you have
implemented in the end, people in a crisis need to talk
with somebody else, someone compassionate who also may
have answers. They need to be able to call a
simple telephone number and know that someone on the
other end will care.

| Oregon SafeNet Connects Families to
Summer Food |
Did
you know that there are more than 400
sites
in
Oregon
where children ages 1 through
18
can get a free meal and have some fun this
summer?
 Call
1-800-SAFENET or use the searchable
database of community sites across Oregon
offering
free lunches and sometimes breakfasts and snacks for all
children.
And because children find fun as important as food
during summer vacation, many sites offer free or
low-cost activities along with the
meals.
There are no other eligibility requirements or
applications. Children can just show
up!
This
program is intended to serve children. However, in some
cases, sites
can
sell meals to parents for a small fee, or provide free
meals to parent volunteers. Check with staff at your
local site for more information.
If
you know of a family who might benefit from the Summer
Food Program, please contact 1-800-SAFENET or
visit
summerfoodoregon.org. |

The Val Ogden
Center is a supportive community for adult men and
women who live with mental illness and live in Clark
County, Washington. The Val Ogden Center is a
Clubhouse Model program and therefore the center is
operated by its participants (called members) and an
intentionally small staff. Working in the
Clubhouse helps members build self-confidence, stamina
and employment and social skills. The goal of the
Clubhouse is to assist people in returning to work or
college and the Val Ogden Center assists people in
achieving these goals by offering vocational placement
and retention programs and a supported education
program. Listen to
Kids works together with children and adults to end
child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault
through prevention and early intervention programs. Kids
CanTM and Families & FeelingsTM are school-based
workshops for children preschool through 6th grade in
which children learn about their right to personal
safety and help if they are living with violence, and
parents and teachers learn how to identify abuse, talk
to children about violence, and respond to disclosures.
In the Parent-Child Involvement Project (PChIP) parents
and children who have left a domestic violence situation
receive assistance in rebuilding the parenting
relationship that may have been compromised as a result
of living with violence.
The
Sunshine Division, a nonprofit agency in unique
partnership with Portland Police Bureau, provides
year-round emergency food and clothing relief to
Portland individuals and families. Persons who are
between jobs, ill, disabled, elderly, victims of
domestic violence-in short, anyone in need of food or
clothing. Sunshine Division also operates the Izzy's
Kids clothes shopping program, in which police officers
shop with low-income children for much needed school
clothes. |

is help, through follow-up calls we learn that many
people are getting help from community
agencies.

we were able to avoid being shut off."
