Top 5 tips for searching

  1. The database will look for the exact phrase you search.
If you search for “shelter” it will return all the information with the word “shelter.” If you search “youth shelter” it will only return results that contain the exact phrase “youth shelter.” The more words you use in a search the fewer options are presented, and you may see no options at all.

  2. Keep in mind search results are for ALL Oregon and Southwest Washington.
Results are organized by the services nearest to you within the entire region. If a search comes back with information for a service not in your region, that means there is no service in your region and the information you see is the closest service to you, even if it is across the state.

  3. Suggested terms are not the only option.
When you’re typing a keyword a list of suggested terms will begin to appear. The terms include “top hits.” If the term you are looking for doesn’t appear, complete your keyword search, which will produce more options.

  4. Using the keyword list may be your best bet for finding the correct information.
In order to keep the information organized, 211s use a somewhat complicated sorting system involving terms that can be, at times, a bit technical. Using the keyword list is the best way to avoid confusion.

  5. A phone call may be the best option.
If you need help with complicated requests, the best option is dialing 211, toll-free, Monday–Friday, 8am-6pm. Our live specialists can help you creatively problem solve in ways a database just can’t.
