Great Giveaway set for Aug. 18 in Central Oregon

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints plans it annual Central Oregon Great Giveaway on Saturday in Bend, Redmond, and Prineville.

The non-denominational event, in its 10th year, collects clothing, housewares, bedding, and other usable items from the community, then distributes them for free to anyone in need.

Collections take place from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the locations below.

Anyone can show up from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the same locations to browse items and select goods they need.

Free fashion options flourish in Portland and Salem

I knew better than to walk into an upscale clothing store in Portland’s Pearl District last Sunday. It was fun to see what’s “in” for spring but a little disheartening to look at the price tags. Ninety-eight dollars for a sleeveless blouse! What?

Once I left the store and caught my breath, I reminded myself of all the free ways to build a wardrobe that would be the envy of any fashionista. You just have to think out of the box. Here are some ideas:

WHAT'S HAPPENING: The Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul Society are giving away warm coats for people in need living in Hood River, Sherman and Wasco counties. Walk-ins are accepted.

WHERE: Salvation Army, 623 E. 3rd St., The Dalles

WHEN: Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
