Opportunity knocks to help out seniors through paid jobs and volunteerism | Tigard

By Deb Kallen, Communications Assistant

WHAT'S HAPPENING: Several Washington County-based agencies have put their heads together to come up with a win-win solution for the seniors they serve and the people in the community who might be of service. Senior GAP, Home Instead and Hospice of Washington County are co-hosting a forum to get the word out about a variety of volunteer and paid part-time opportunities to work with their clients.

How is this a win-win? The benefits for the seniors are obvious. They need and appreciate the help. But what are the positives for those who give of their time and expertise? For those who are currently unemployed, staying active and engaged can increase their chances of becoming employed. It has been documented that states with a high rate of volunteerism suffer lower increases in unemployment during economic downturns. In addition, helping others creates a sense of personal fulfillment, whether a person has a job or not, but especially if they don't. Often, people who are out of work tend to withdraw and may begin to feel depressed. Getting out in the world and making a difference reduces isolation and increases mood.

All in all, there are so many reasons to attend this event. The forum platform will introduce Washington County residents to community resources for seniors and their families who may need them. So even if your time isn't available to help out a senior, maybe one of these organizations can provide ideas for you to get help for a senior in your family. Refreshments will be served and, for some lucky participants, they will go home with prizes including a New Seasons gift basket, an Olive Garden or Amazon.com gift card.

WHERE: Home Instead, Tigard office, 12194 SW Scholls Ferry Rd.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 15, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
