In any given day, 3,467 people in Lane County are without a permanent place to call home. On March 17th, 1,596 people in the midst of their own personal housing crisis, showed up for the 5th Annual Lane County Project Homeless Connect community event.

The record-setting number of people served that day demonstrates the tremendous need for the homeless to have a place where they can access goods and services, all in one place.

The outpouring of support by 1,185 volunteers represents the tremendous commitment of Lane County residents to reach out to those who are struggling. Medical, dental, vision, pet care, personal grooming, bicycle repair and housing information were among the services received. Project Homeless Connect guests were also provided with sleeping bags, diapers, backpacks, shoes, jackets and clothing, as needed.

Volunteer hearts were touched and lives affected by the many stories heard when visiting with the people who attended the event, according to Project Homeless staffers. “The positive energy and the gratitude expressed by our guests for the dignity and respect shown to them were truly inspiring,” said Lin J. Holmquist, Resource Manager for 211 in Lane County.

Project Homeless Connect is a nationwide movement based on offering one-stop shop events to increase access to services for homeless people and to engage local communities in finding a solution to homelessness.
