Beat the heat: Cooling centers open for hot weather across the region

Temperatures are predicted to stay above 90 degrees for much of Oregon and SW Washington. Cooling centers are opening to help keep people out of the heat.

 

Cooling Centers in Multnomah County for Elderly Residents

Multnomah County Department of Human Services’ Aging and DisabilityServices Division (ADS) will activate its cooling center system for elderly residents during extreme temperatures.

Here are the Cooling Centers and their extended hours for elderly residents:

• NORTHEAST PORTLAND: Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 NE 40th Ave. Portland, 503-288-8803.
• DOWNTOWN: Meals on Wheels People (Elm Court) 1032 SW Main St., Portland, 503-953-8204.
• NORTH PORTLAND: Pioneer United Methodist Church, 7528 N. Charleston Ave., Portland.
• EAST COUNTY: Ambleside Meals on Wheels People, Multnomah County East Building, 600 NE 8th St., Gresham, 503-988-3840.

These centers for elderly residents are activated based on weather conditions. When the forecast calls for three or more days of 95 degree or greater temperatures, county and community partners evaluate the need for cooling centers. 

 

Clark County, Washington

The Battle Ground Community Center at 912 E Main Street will be open from 8am-8pm Monday through Friday starting Monday, July 14th to provide an air-conditioned place for residents go. Visitors may bring picnic meals, books, magazines, board games and activities for children. Wi-Fi will be available for mobile devices. 

 

Clackamas County

The Clackamas Service Center at 8800 SE 80th Avenue in Portland will be open to the public from 10am-6:30pm, Monday through Saturday during times of extreme heat. Meals and other services available. For more information, call 503-771-7914 or visit www.cscoregon.org.

The Sandy Senior Center at 38348 Pioneer Boulevard in Sandy, Oregon is open to the public every Monday through Friday from 8:30-5pm. For more information, call 503-668-5569.

The Lake Oswego Adult Community Center at 505 G Avenue is open every Monday through Thursday, 8am-8:30pm, Friday 8am-4:30pm and Saturday from 9:30am-1pm. The general public is welcome to come and stay cool. For more information, call 503-635-3758.

Damascus Community Church at 14251 SE Rust Way is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30am-5pm during extreme temperatures. Please call ahead 503-658-3179.

Winfield Village at 8170 SW Vlahos Drive in Wilsonville is open 7 days/week from 8am-5pm during extreme temperatures with water and snacks available. 503-682-0653

The Wilsonville Public Library at 8200 SW Wilsonville Road will be open as a cooling center until 9pm if the temperature reaches 100 degrees. For more information, call 503-682-2744.

Washington County

The Community Senior Center of HIllsboro at 750 SE 8th Avenue will be open Monday through Firday from 9am-5pm. 503-648-3823

The Elsie Stuhr Center at 550 SW Hall Boulevard in Beaverton will be open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30am-9pm, Wednesday and Friday from 7:30am-5pm and Saturday from 9am-5pm. 503-629-6342

The Cedar Hills Recreation Center at 11640 SW Park Way in Portland will be open from Monday through Friday from 6pm-10pm, Saturday from 8am-4pm and on Sunday from 10am-4pm. 503-629-6340.

Marion County

The Salem Public Library at 585 Liberty Street SE in Salem will be open Tuesday - Thursday from 10am-9pm, Friday and Saturday from 10am-6pm and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. 503-588-6071  http://www.cityofsalem.net/Departments/Library/Pages/home.aspx

Spray Fountains in Salem, OR
The following self-operating spray fountains are open beginning June 19 from 10:00 a.m. to
8:00 p.m. every day:

  • Fairmount Park, 650 Rural Street S. 
  • Northgate Park, 3575 Fairhaven Avenue NE
  • River Road Park, 3045 River Road N. (New facility opening this summer!)
  • Riverfront Park, 200 Water Street NE
  • Wes Bennett Park, 2200 Baxter Road SE
  • West Salem Park, 265 Rosemont Avenue NW
      

Yamhill County

Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP) at 1317 Dustin Court in McMinnville is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 to 5pm. There is a Resource Room with a computer and printer, board games, magazines, etc. Air conditioning, restrooms, water. 503-472-0457

The McMinnville Public Library at 225 NW Adams Street is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am-8pm, Friday from 10am-5pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm-5pm and is closed Mondays.

The Champion Team Drop-In Center at 2215 NE Mcdonald Lane is open for folks to come in and cool off, drink tea or coffee, play board games, look for housing or work, do crafts, participate in support groups, etc, weekdays from 10am-2pm and Wednesdays from 10am-6pm. This site accepts guests who are 18 years of age or older and identify as having had challenges with addictions, mental illness or other disabilities. For more information, call 503-474-4600.

The McMinnville Cooperative Ministries at 544 NE 2nd Street is open Monday through Wednesday from 9:30am-12:30pm from the Northwest entrance but is not air conditioned. The North side entrance in the new building is open from 9:30am-4:30pm with temperature set at 78 degrees. This is only a hallway space with restrooms and a drinking fountain. Youth Outreach at 719 E First Street in Newberg is open as a cooling center for youth ages 11-21 Monday through Friday from noon-9pm.
