Multnomah County launches Healthy Streets Program

Healthy Streets

The city of Portland and Multnomah County Health Department have launched a 12-month pilot project called “Healthy Streets.’’ The goal is to reduce the number of discarded syringes in downtown Portland.

Two secure medical waste bins are located downtown on Portland’s Waterfront Esplanade so injections drug users may safely dispose of used needles. One bin is located on the west waterfront under the Burnside Bridge and a second on the Eastbank Esplanade near Salmon Street. A biohazard contractor will regularly and safely empty the bins.

Frequently Asked Questions about the syringe program are posted at www.multco.us/health.
