Honor Dr. King's legacy through service this MLK Day

The United Way of the Columbia-Willamette invites you to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy through service this MLK weekend. The holiday honoring his work to advance the human condition makes us marvel at the change one man can bring through deep conviction and commitment. Hands On Greater Portland, UW’s volunteer arm, asks us to consider the change we can then affect as a group of committed individuals who care about the communities in which we live.

Coming into its eighth year, UW’s Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Service has already done much good throughout the Portland Metro Area. Consider that just last year alone, more than 1,000 volunteers in the four county areas of Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas, and Clark counties participated in 46 volunteer projects across the region for a total of more than 3,900 hours of volunteer service - and that’s just in the Portland Metro Area! These Oregonians and Southwest Washingtonians were part of a grander project, a nation-wide day of service in remembrance of Dr. King’s legacy.

The scope of this event is only growing, with a projected 50 service opportunities to get involved with in neighborhoods throughout the region.

Examples of service opportunities include restoration and refurbishing projects at schools and community centers, sorting food and clothing, serving meals, home repairs, and planting trees among other community improvements.
